Time is Precious

How do significant life events or the passage of time influence your perspective on life?

Every single thing that happens to us influences our perspective on life. Some large events affect us more. With the passage of time, we are granted the gift of wisdom. Hopefully we use what we’ve learned. People sometimes lament about getting older. The truth is, getting older is a privilege denied to many.

I have no deep philosophizing for this prompt. Instead, I thought of song lyrics to a accompany my response.

This song has always had a very mellow feel to me. It reminds me of another time. Maybe sitting on a school bus listening to the radio, heading to or from school. The other kids laughing and talking, throwing stuff over my head. The gym-like smell of the seats. Did other people have bus drivers who let them listen to the radio? Please let me know in the comments, because my bus was jamming.

Time (Clock of the Heart) – Culture Club

Don’t put your head on my shoulder
Sink me in a river of tears
This could be the best place yet
But you must overcome your fears

Oh, in time
It could have been so much more
The time is precious I know
In time
It could have been so much more
The time has nothing to show

Because
Time won’t give me time
And time makes lovers feel
Like they’ve got something real
But you and me
We know we’ve got
Nothin’ but time
And time won’t give me time
Won’t give me time
(Time, time, time)

Don’t make me feel any colder
Time is like a clock in my heart
Touch we, touch was the
Heat too much
I felt I
Lost you from the start

Oh, in time
It could have been so much more
The time is precious I know
In time
It could have been so much more
The time has nothing to show

Oh, in time
It could have been so much more
The time is precious I know
In time
It could have been so much more
The time has nothing to show

  1. Never took the bus. Walked, rode my bike, or when old enough, drove to school. lol
That said, this song does remind me of the good old school days. I was more of a metalhead, but as I have grown older, the pop of the 80s sounds far better than a lot of what’s being peddled these days. To me, at least 😄

    1. I’m sorry you never had to experience the smelly seats of a school bus. And the push and shove matches to get to the back seats first. Or when some kid puked and everyone else had to deal with it for the whole bus ride. *Which reminds me of the time my best friend threw up on me on the school bus. 😄 My schools were quite far away from where I lived, so buses were necessary. 80s Pop was on heavy rotation on my school bus. And at the skating rink, and in my mom’s car, and in my room on my little radio boombox thing…good times.

*going to remind my best friend about this again today, and how she ruined my stuffed panda bear with her puke. 😂

      1. This one is indoors. It’s going strong. I still have my rollerskates with the hot pink wheels. I am sometimes tempted, not gonna lie.😂
        Progress…ha.
“Big yellow taxi” song lyrics are appropriate when discussing progress…

      2. And sadly, can be taken almost verbatim.
Oh, ok. I thought the one near you was like an outdoor rink or something.
Holy hell, I just looked and one of them is still open near me. I thought it closed too. lmao
Of course,t hey do about 50 things now too. Arcade, laser tag, etc. Probably have to to survive.

      3. I think mine is just predominantly skating. I guess skating is popular here. I may have to go over there last time I was there got kicked out because I wouldn’t put skates on. Yes as an adult.😂
Yes, that’s why I thought of that song. Sad

      4. Kicked out of a skating rink 😄
I’m only going by the web page, but based on that, it looks like the one here branched out a lot. Hey, they’re still kicking, so good on them!

I swear, my town is 90% parking these days. Parking to get to other parking lots maybe? 🤷‍♂️

      5. Yes, kicked out of a skating rink. I’m a rebel.😂
Whatever it takes to stay afloat as a skating rink, I’m all for!
Maybe park the car and take a bus? I have no idea why you would have so much parking unless there are a lot of buses. Or new stores? 🤷‍♀️

      6. That’s the kicker. There used to be a ton of businesses down there, and these days I don’t see them. My chiro is down in that area, so I just went through there twice last week.

There’s a fair amount of storefronts, but they are small places and literally all right next to each other and easily accessible on foot.
There is a bus station, but it’s not like it’s overflowing with people. It’s a local bus line, not one that books trips, etc.
I’m sure someone’s pocket got lined to build a meaningless lot and that’s why they’re there 😄

      7. My city does a lot of dumb shit. They built a second bridge to manage traffic flow better. One goes north, other goes south. Cool. But then they funneled the three lane bridge into a one lane street right after you come off it. The crack rock at that planning meeting must have been exquisite.

      8. Really? Coincidental. I’m more familiar with the counting crows version, but I know Joni Mitchell is the original. I would have thought she would’ve been on the Grammys well before now, but hey, better late than never.

      9. Grammys and all that shit seem to focus on the flavor of the day mostly. You either have to be the hottest new act, or a bonafide legend before they will pay attention. Looks like that to me, at least.

      10. I probably know the names but but I don’t know who they are or what they do. And some of the people I have no clue. I don’t really care either.😄

      11. About the only newer band I am really into is Mammoth WVH. It’s Eddie Van Halen’s son’s project, and the guy kicks ass. Plays all the instruments on the album and wails on guitar. Great voice too.
Other than that, most anything new I listen to is new tracks from legacy acts like the Stones, Ozzy, etc.

      12. I know of Wolfie. I’m not really listening to new music at this point. If I sit here and think about it, I’m really not listening to new music. not sure when that happened… 🤷‍♀️

      13. Happened for me around the 2010s with a few rare exceptions, WVH being one of them. I’ll hear something now and then that piques my interest, but it’s rare.

      14. Kevin. I was in the grocery store today and Van Halen came on the radio. David Lee Roth era I can’t remember the song now. 😂 I did see them in concert once with my ex. It was the late 90s I think. It was Sammy Hagar and crew at the spectrum in Philly. The spectrum has since been torn down and it has been quite a while since it’s been torn down. my ex was a huge fan.

      15. I always hear “Panama” when they play them at my grocery store lol
The last tour with Sammy until the 2004 reunion would have been 95/96 on the Balance tour. The one prior would have been 93 when they were out supporting their live album, but I think that was all outdoor amphitheaters. Was Eddie rocking the short hair and goatee?
Seems all the old venues get torn down and/or renamed. Like when they tore Boston Garden down and built the TD Garden literally about 6 inches away 😄

      16. I do hear Panama a lot, but it wasn’t that lol. I’m trying to think what year it was. I had to look it up from the spectrum’s old concert list. I think it was in May 1998 with Fuel. they did a concert there at 95 with Collective Soul opening but we saw Collective Soul at another venue that was smaller and wasn’t in Philly. So I’m pretty sure it was May 24, 1998. Our seats were so far away. I don’t know what any of them were wearing or looking like lol. Spectrum was demolished in 2011 I think and that Wells Fargo center is nearby but not in the same spot. I’ve never been there though. Also today weird thing. Dropped off some paperwork to a store in a shopping center. Half of it being demolished. I asked the girl at the store what was happening and she said oh they’re just tearing that down and building a parking lot. I said no that can’t happen. I just told someone that we don’t have parking lots taking up space here. And she said well we do now.😂

      17. Define irony, eh? lol
The only other VH I have heard in the grocery store that I recall with Dave was “You Really Got Me” and “Jump”
If it was 1998 that was when Gary Cherone was doing vocals. As much as people bitched about the album he did with them, that tour was killer. Lots of old cuts and Eddie’s playing was fire on that trek.

  2. I started the song while I read your last paragraph. I was reminded of the first girl I kissed. [I just deleted 80 percent of my response. Grammarly said it was gloomy. It was going to end well though!] It was the first time I felt connected to someone else.

Grammarly now tells me I sound skeptical. [more editing] Now I’m joyful and optimistic. Yay!

      1. It was the first time I’ve been critiqued while writing. I need to ignore the feature. Good memories though, for sure. She’s got a whole slew of family now. Children, grandchildren, and even very young great-grandchildren. Enough to fill a school bus!

    1. Yikes! Detention? We must’ve had cool bus drivers. That fought on the bus definitely got detention or expulsion. But maybe the help the driver drown out the screaming and laughing kids. Lol
Thanks! Art has a way of doing that, doesn’t it?

  3. I’m a bit of a philistine when it comes to song lyrics – I go more for the melodies or rhythm. But you illustrate the point well with those from Culture Club. I’d never paid much attention before.
    😀

(We had our transistors on the school bus – the girls hushing everybody up when Donny Osmond or David Cassidy came on – the boys waiting for Free or Led Zeppelin, so they could shake their long, greasy hair. 😀 )

  4. ‘The truth is, getting older is a privilege denied to many.’ This is such a beautiful line! It’s sort of similar to something my dad often says about getting old (‘It’s better than the alternative’), although your version is more eloquent.

  5. Time: Making Lovers Feel Like They’ve Got Something Real (But Do We Really?)

This post hits the nail on the head about life events shaping our perspectives. Plus, who knew a school bus could be a time machine back to the ’80s? Nostalgia and wisdom in one post – bravo! 🕰️🚌
