What’s a book, movie, or TV show that you wish you could experience again for the first time?
I read the books years ago (and they are not yet finished being written by Diana Gabaldon), and waited not very patiently for it to be picked up as a TV show or a movie. When it finally was picked up by STARZ, and became a series in 2013, I was very excited. I have watched every season and the final season just aired, with the last episode being in May. It feels like it’s been a year and a half since the last episode, but it’s only been a little over a month? This last season was trash, in my opinion. They “jumped the shark,” as the old saying goes. It’s like the interns wrote the last season. Out of order. And with no prior knowledge of any of the books or previous seasons. But I digress.
The funny thing about reading is if you wait long enough and you reread a book, it’s almost like reading it again for the first time. It’s different with TV shows. I think the visual memory is wired differently in the brain, and although you can rewatch something and not remember everything, visually you do start to have memories and there’s that part of your brain that tells you “Ahh, yes, this is why I love this show.” At least, that’s what I have found to be the case. Not that I don’t occasionally start over at season one of Outlander, because I do. But it’s just not the same as the first time I watched it. The novelty is gone, but the affection remains.

I like rereading books after a time but I don’t really rewatch shows, only very old ones, like full house, and the george lopez show. xo

Sometimes I can rewatch old shows, sometimes they don’t interest me anymore. Life is funny like that. ♥️

Hi, Amy. I haven’t seen the last season yet, but it sounds rather disappointing. This is one of those shows for me, too, where I miss the novelty of it.

I think they don’t have enough time to tell the whole story on the TV show, so they condense and elaborate. It seems the last season of outlander went totally off the rails, and created storylines. Then there wasn’t any time left to close the storylines. 😊

Oh boy. I just spoke to my daughter about this yesterday because there are some storylines we don’t know how they will be able to wrap up. This is good to know.

This is an interesting observation, Amy. I agree with you that a book can feel very fresh after a few years, in a way a show or film can’t quite capture.

I’ve seen the first season, and a few episodes of the second season of outlander. Is the show just “based on the books“ or is it more of a straight up adaptation?
Ronald Moore, the series showrunner also wrote a bunch of episodes for the Star Trek franchise and created the Battlestar Galactica reboot of the early 2000s, so I’m kind of a big fan

Outlander completely went off the rails in terms of being like the books. The books are thousands of pages each and if I’m not mistaken, there are nine of them. The author is working on the last book. The first few seasons were sort of like the books, but I would definitely recommend reading the books prior to watching the show. And realizing they are two separate entities.
